Day 12 ~ Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day

Congratulations to Lori O. for winning the giveaway, and a huge “Thank You” to all the visitors and commenters ~ you made my week with all your wonderful suggestions (and recipes!) Happy Holidays!!

I’m so excited that Sew Mama Sew has organized another Giveaway Day ~ I love participating. If this is your first visit to Sleepy Owl Studio ~ Welcome! And if you’re a regular? Thank you!

How does it work? Between today (December 12th) and Friday, December 16th, leave me a comment on this post. Comments will close at 5pm PST on Friday. Once it closes, I’ll use a random number generator to pick a winner, send out an e-mail requesting a mailing address, and then share the happy news here on the blog.

After you’re done here, be sure to click on the button for links to the categories and all the blogs participating.

What am I giving away? If you visited last week, you may have seen the fabric basket I made for Ashlee using Ayumi’s terrific tutorial on her blog “Pink Penguin“.  I loved how it came out, so I made another one, again using Holiday Happy by Happy Zombie.

And in the basket? How about (8) 10″ cocktail/dessert napkins and a stack of (18) 6.5″ squares of 9 prints? Perfect for making a table runner or topper to go with the napkins.

This giveaway is open to all visitors – I will happily ship internationally if the lucky winner is from outside the US.

And the comment? How about telling me what your favorite holiday beverage is? You could even share a recipe if it requires one ~ in the spirit of the season, of course!

I think my favorite holiday drink is hot coco with a home made marshmallow in it.
I think coco you can buy but the ” mallows” you need to make yourself.

    Marshmallow

    3 packages unflavored gelatin
1 cup ice cold water, divided
12 ounces granulated sugar, approximately 1 1/2 cups
    1 cup light corn syrup
    1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar
    1/4 cup cornstarch
    Nonstick spray
    Directions
Place the gelatin into the bowl of a stand mixer along with 1/2 cup of the water. Have the whisk attachment standing by.

In a small saucepan combine the remaining 1/2 cup water, granulated sugar, corn syrup and salt. Place over medium high heat, cover and allow to cook for 3 to 4 minutes. Uncover, clip a candy thermometer onto the side of the pan and continue to cook until the mixture reaches 240 degrees F, approximately 7 to 8 minutes. Once the mixture reaches this temperature, immediately remove from the heat.

Turn the mixer on low speed and, while running, slowly pour the sugar syrup down the side of the bowl into the gelatin mixture. Once you have added all of the syrup, increase the speed to high. Continue to whip until the mixture becomes very thick and is lukewarm, approximately 12 to 15 minutes. Add the vanilla during the last minute of whipping. While the mixture is whipping prepare the pans as follows.

    For regular marshmallows:
Combine the confectioners’ sugar and cornstarch in a small bowl. Lightly spray a 13 by 9-inch metal baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Add the sugar and cornstarch mixture and move around to completely coat the bottom and sides of the pan. Return the remaining mixture to the bowl for later use.

When ready, pour the mixture into the prepared pan, using a lightly oiled spatula for spreading evenly into the pan. Dust the top with enough of the remaining sugar and cornstarch mixture to lightly cover. Reserve the rest for later. Allow the marshmallows to sit uncovered for at least 4 hours and up to overnight.

Turn the marshmallows out onto a cutting board and cut into 1-inch squares using a pizza wheel dusted with the confectioners’ sugar mixture. Once cut, lightly dust all sides of each marshmallow with the remaining mixture, using additional if necessary. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks.

    Enjoy!!
And thank you for including us in your little give away.

What a beautiful basket and the fabrics are so pretty. I have not made that tutorial yet myself but have seen many others who have. I need one of those next to my bed so I’d be thrilled with that, especially seeing all the amazing things you make.

When I’m not drinking my coffee during the winter my other favorite drinks change between Hot Apple Cider and Cinnamon Hot Chocolate. The Cinnamon Hot Chocolate is extremely addicting but I have yet to find a recipe I like that compares to the packages I buy in the store.

I should be proper & say that hot chocolate or cider is my fav. holiday beverage. However, it’s not. My favorite beverage is the adult beverage I indulge in once all the presents are wrapped & under the tree, finally, on Christmas Eve. Some years it’s a beer, others a mixed drink, but always much “needed”

    1/2 cup cranberry juice

Cocktail shaker filled with ice. Combine 1st four ingredients and shake well. Pour into ice-filled glasses or canning jars, garnish with lime slices. Rims can be salted or sugared ahead of time by running a lime slice around the edge and dipping the glass into the preferred rim embellishment.

I love egg nog, but this year I found that they have a pumpkin spice flavored egg nog. I have yet to try it, but I am really curious to see if it is any good. Also, my dad’s girlfriend is always finding weird things in different stores and she came upon a pumpkin pie liqueur. She says it’s delicious, but I am a bit skeptical on it. Maybe the liqueur in the regular egg nog may be something to try!

The most amazing mint hot chocolate you ever tasted. I tweeked a recipe from here
( http://www.mrshappyhomemaker.com/2010/12/creamy-hot-cocoa-in-crockpot.html ). I changed up the chocolate a little, and a few measurements, and added the peppermint extract.

    Place in crock pot:
    1/2 cup sugar
    1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

Whisk in, until a smooth paste is made:
1 can sweetened condensed milk (14oz)

Add and stir until evenly mixed:
2 cups heavy cream (whipping cream)
    8 cups of milk
    1 tsp vanilla extract
    1/2 tsp extract of peppermint

    Stir in:
    1 cup milk chocolate chips

Cook on low for 2 hours, stirring occasionally. Serve. (marshmallows optional 🙂

  324. What a lovely Giveaway!
A beverage I connect with Christmastime is what we in Germany call “Feuerzangenbowle”. It´s a beverage with a lot of Rum, Orangejuice and orangeslices, some spices like cinnemon and other christmas-smell-ones. On the top of the pod you install a kind of a tongs that holds a big piece of sugar. This sugarpiece will be soaked with Rum and than you flame it. The sugar slowly drops into the Feuerzangenbowle and looks so great (you have to switch off the light!) and it makes the beverage sweet and dangerous (you don`t notice the alcohol…).
It really is a great beverage to share with some good friends who do not need to drive a car afterwards.
If you want to top it, watch the german movie “Feuerzangenbowle” with Heinz Rühmann….
    Have fun!
    Silke from Germany

Then I fill the mug 3/4 full with coffee…stir…then top it off with milk. YUM!

    Dash of nutmeg
